:: PICTURE BRIDES: SALINA, KANSAS ::
The found photos are of two different couples, posed at the same studio in Salina, Kansas, and a story about them took shape in my mind and guided the development of this piece. Because of a lack of women in the expanding American West, men would run ads in Eastern newspapers looking for potential brides. After exchanging pictures and letters, the women would travel westward to their new life of scrubbing floors, chopping wood, plowing fields, and having many children.
Wood, metal, thread, antique seed sorter, washboard, rug beater, kitchen implements, found photographs.
